In an art world drowning in trends and digital gimmicks, Alexander F. G. Kern stands unwavering in his pursuit of abstract oil painting—bold, precise, and unapologetically original.

Born in 1962 and raised in the documenta city of Kassel, he was immersed in the avant-garde from an early age, actively participating in documenta with his children’s painting group. His education at what is now Germany’s top-ranked school (officially recognized by the Federal President) introduced him to the mathematical precision of M.C. Escher and the striking visions of Uwe Brandi.

Optics, in more ways than one, shaped his career. Training as an optician brought him into the world of eyewear design, sharpening his understanding of form, balance, and how people quite literally see the world. But his true passion remained oil on canvas, where he has spent years refining his abstract interpretations—some of which even nod to Mondrian, though with a signature twist.

Art runs deep in his lineage. Alexander F. G. Kern descends from the renowned Baroque sculptor family Michael Kern, whose work is considered sculpturally on par with Michelangelo’s. Centuries of artistic heritage may be behind him, but his work is purely his own.

Extensive travels across Europe, North, and South America exposed him to diverse artistic movements, further enriching his exploration of form, color, and composition.

In the mid-1990s, he immigrated with his family to Lima, Peru, where he fully dedicated himself to abstract oil painting with growing intensity. His work remains a relentless pursuit of artistic expression, free from conventions and expectations.

A tireless innovator, Alexander F. G. Kern continues to surprise with new perspectives, unexpected compositions, and a quiet refusal to explain his work to anyone who insists on asking.
